Meet Odie ~ GWP Rescue for Adoption Pointer

“Odie is back in Kansas. He is a wonderful boy that loves his family. He is good with the other dogs, is around 3 years old now. He sleeps outside of the crate, and doesn’t touch a thing. We we do have to leave, he has a special dog box he feels totally secure in. He is not for someone gone long hours, he does best with a family with opposite shifts, where he may only be alone a couple of hours….or someone working part time such as myself, where I am gone 4-5 hours per day. He does very well with that. He is fully vetted, and has been on frontline and heartgard year around. We love our Odie….he is a great dog! He prefers a quiet home, as he is a relaxed laid back boy. Hos owner gave him up due to a job change where he was gone very long hours…..that crushed Odies little heart…..”

Adopt Lucy ~ GWP Puppy Mill Rescue 6 mo old

Lucy is a darling 5-6 month old GWP puppy that was part of a hoarding situation. She is extremely happy, and gets along with the other pups here. She has been fully vetted, will be spayed soon. She will be microchipped, on frontline and heartgard. She is learning some basic obedience, crate and leash skills. She is a typical GWP puppy that will require a lot of exercise and attention. She can climb a 6′ chainlink fence and is very proud of this….see our website www.GWPRescue.com for an application to adopt Lucy.

Paws in the Park Petwalk Benefit 10/2 Bowdoin Park, Poughkeepsie

A Bit ABout Paws in the Park Petwalk from the Dutchess County SPCA…

Paws in the Park Petwalk was created as a way to raise funds for the Dutchess County SPCA, while educating the public about the plight of the homeless and abused animals. The first Petwalk was held in 1994, when approximately 90 participants helped to raise $9000 to benefit the shelter. Since then, this yearly event has provided a fun, festive, educational and informative environment for our pet loving community. And thanks to our supporters and participants, it is now one of our largest fundraisers, raising almost $50,000 last year to help our shelter animals.

We hope you’ll join us on Saturday, October 2, 2010 for this fun event — you’ll have a doggone good time!

Visit Paws in the Park Petwalk or the Dutchess Country SPCA website for more info on how to participate, help fundraise & more.

Adopt Suzy Q ~ GWP Mill Dog Rescue

Miss Suzy Q is also one of the mill dogs from a large bust in the Midwest. She is shy, but each day I see her learning, cutting loose with Baldwin running in the yard. I think in a couple of months at our rehab home she will be fully recovered from her past. She seems to like kids, and other dogs very much. She is able to put her past behind her little by little, and wants to enjoy life. We will be working with her for the next several weeks…

GWPs Seized in Cruelty Case Emergency Funding Needed

~~ PLEASE CROSS-POST~~

Last September, 175 hunting dogs were seized for cruelty and neglect in South Dakota. The dogs seized were GWPs, GSPs, Weims, Vizslas and Brittanys.  Within a couple weeks of the seizure, 37 females whelped another 150+ puppies. These poor dogs until now have been in legal limbo. The numbers are tentative and fluctuate daily, but we know there are atleast 12 adult GWPs that need help.

GWPRescue Inc. and East Coast GWP Rescue Inc., are working together to help save these wirehairs in need.  Our two organizations are doing the majority of GWP rescue in the country, these 12+ dogs pose a great strain on our resources as we are being overrun by other GWPs in shelters and owner relinquishes.  We do not receive any outside support and rely on individual donations to continue our rescue efforts.  An estimated cost for vetting, supplies, transportation costs is exceeding $900/dog.

East Coast GWP Rescue has been generously  donated the space to temporarily house the 10 dogs coming East.  Once they have been evaluated and vetted, we are in need of foster homes!

They are in DIRE need of monetary donations, supplies and foster homes.

DONATE!

We are going to need atleast 10 foster homes to be able to take these pitiful dogs once they’ve been evaulated.   While some are reported to have a playful nature, some may require a long term stay (6 months) in foster.   They are going to need socialization, learn to live in a home and trust people.

Because of the sheer number of dogs, this will be a combined rescue effort between GWP Rescue Inc. and East Coast GWP Rescue.  The money raised to help these dogs will be split between the two rescues to cover the costs of the dogs. We will also be sending out updates on the dogs and their progress!  All donations are tax deductible.

Dozens of miniature horses, dogs turned over to Houston SPCA, TX

Source: khou.com, July 21, 2010

A Grimes County woman gave up 100 miniature horses and 46 dogs Wednesday because she couldn’t afford to care for them in the struggling economy.

The animals are being taken to the Houston SPCA. All will undergo a medical and behavioral evaluation before they can be put up for adoption.

The miniature horses are thin and have not received proper hoof care, according to the SPCA. The organization is requesting the help of volunteer equine veterinarians and farriers to treat the horses. They also need donations of miniature horse halters and lead ropes.

Horses are expensive to keep and the plunging economy is taking its toll on horse owners.  According to Horseman Magazine, the average cost of caring for a horse is five times the amount of caring for a dog.  Sadly, many horses—locally and nationally—are being abandoned and slowly left to starve to death.

If you are interested in donating, fostering or adopting a horse, call 713-869-7722, ext. 138.
