Dog covered in petrol and set alight in Liverpool

A dog has been tied to a fence, covered in petrol and set on fire on a football field in Liverpool.

Passers-by heard the cries of the female Staffordshire bull terrier-cross in Kirkdale, and tried to help, but the animal had to be put to sleep.

The one-year-old dog had been missing for a few days, the RSPCA said.

RSPCA chief inspector Simon Small: “The fact that someone could do this to a living creature is beyond comprehension.”

The incident happened on Tuesday night on a sports pitch off Stanley Road.

“It doesn’t get worse than what happened here,” Mr Small said.

“I’ve never had to deal with an incident like this in my nine years with the society.

“This dog suffered tremendously before she died. This was a deliberate act of extreme cruelty of the type I hope never to see again.”

The RSPCA is urging anyone with information about the attack to come forward.

“This was a cowardly and cruel attack on a defenceless animal whose suffering was immense,” Mr Small said.

Apparent puppy mill burns to the ground in Tunica County, MS

A fire at an apparent puppy mill in north Mississippi resulted in a crisis Monday for a local humane society.

Authorities said a suspected puppy mill was inside a house trailer that caught fire Monday morning along France Road in Dundee, Mississippi.

Neighbor Charles Logwood said the fire started in the trailer’s laundry room, where many of the dogs had been brought in because of the cold.

“When I got there he didn’t know it was on fire,” Logwood said.

Jeffrey Hobbs was in the trailer caring for the dogs.

“They got out just in time,” Hobbs said. “He let them all out.”

Officials said two dogs died in the fire.  The bodies of eight additional dogs, which did not die in the fire, were found in a wooded area surrounding the property.

Sandy Williams, who heads the Tunica County Humane Society, helped rescue the dogs. She said the property appeared to be a puppy mill, and the dogs were not being cared for properly.

“Every one I picked up was malnourished,” she said. “They’re covered in fleas over here where the houses are. I saw no signs of food or water.”

The owner of the dogs and the trailer, Stacey Valentine, arrived in tears when she saw what had happened.

“I tried my best to take care of these dogs,” she said. “They eat good and they have medical care.”

Valentine said she sells some of her dogs and the rest are pets. She says the dead dogs in the woods froze to death.

Williams said workers were seeking aid from nearby agencies, including the DeSoto County Animal Shelter, to help care for the animals.

Baltimore’s burned pit bull loses fight

Phoenix, the Baltimore pit bull who was set on fire last week, has died.

The dog, who showed signs of having been used in dogfights, was doused with gasoline and set on fire Wednesday afternoon in Southwest Baltimore. A police officer, upon spotting her, put the fire out with her sweater. No arrests have been made.

The dog was taken to BARCS, treated locally at Swan Harbor Animal Hospital, then sent to Pennsylvania for additional treatment.

Officials at Main Line Animal Rescue, in whose care the dog was placed, said yesterday that Phoenix experienced increased creatinine levels, causing her kidneys to shut down.

The dog,  who arrived at BARCS with her tail wagging even though she’d received burns over 90 percent of her body, was put down at 8:45 this morning.

” She had a strong will to live but her physical problems were just too extensive,” a MLAR representative said. “Thanks to all the caring people who will hold her in their heart.”

”She touched the hearts of everyone that came in contact with her and anyone who heard her story,”  said Jennifer Mead-Brause, executive director of BARCS.  “We can only hope now that someone will come forward so that there can be a conviction on this case.”

As Mead-Brause explained it, Phoenix’s kidneys couldn’t cope with the natural chemicals her body was producing to fight off infection.

“As her body was trying to heal, her muscles were producing natural chemicals that are excreted through the kidneys. Unfortunately her kidneys could not handle the process and began to shut down. Due to kidney failure, and the long road still ahead for recovery, the veterinarians that were caring for her decided it would be best to euthanize her.”

BARCS has set up a reward fund, which now stands at $3,000, for information leading to the suspects.

For information on how to donate to the reward fund, or the Franky Fund, which helped pay for the initial emergency care Phoenix received, visit the BARCS website.

Family dog pulls baby to safety during house fire, KY

I love sharing stories like these….

A family in near Paducah, Kentucky lost everything they own in a house fire this week but they are thankful that everyone got out alive. That may not have happened had it not been for one four-legged member of the family.

Michelle Breiding’s granddaughter Samara cried nearly all morning.

The little girl spent the night with her granny because after a fire at her home, she has nothing but the blue outfit she’s got on.

“That’s about it, that’s all they got they don’t have nothing else. They don’t have clothes, they don’t have food, all their toys are gone,” said Breiding.

Michelle’s son Jason was cooking when he says a grease fire started.

At first it didn’t seem too bad, so he tried to contain it.

“I was trying to do anything I could to put it out, that’s what was going through my mind,” said Jason Breiding.

And while Jason battled to save his home, his wife Heather grabbed their three-month-old son and made it outside.

He assumed their one-year-old daughter was with them.

But, turns out the little girl was with another member of the family, their family dog.

“He grabbed the back of the diaper, put his teeth through the back of the diaper and didn’t even touch her, and pulled her into the living room,” said Jason.

Jason scooped up Samara and then holding his daughter tight, watched as their home burned. Nothing was able to be saved, but Jason has his wife, and two kids and a dog, he’s says he’s indebted to. He’s already got his kids names tattooed on his body, and says the family dog might be next.

“I wasn’t gonna but I think I will, he’s a part of the family now,” said Jason.
