What’s Really in Your Dog’s Food?

Source: PRWeb.com, Nov 24, 2009

Ragazzilife.com, the web based social network for dog parents and certified canine nutritionist Stacy Alldredge host a fun and informative culinary event. Stacy Alldredge will talk about natural, well balanced and home cooked dog cuisine and prepare special tasting menus for dogs to try on site. Parents will be able to network and mingle while enjoying complementary cocktails, wine and gourmet hors d’oeuvres. The event is hosted in a fabulous and private NYC Soho loft.

Why is it that as a society, our diets have taken a positive turn towards whole, organic, and unprocessed foods, yet our “best friends” are still getting servings of dry or greasy mystery chunks? What is really in your dog’s food?

The nation’s top selling dog food contains the following ingredients: Meat by-products, Modified corn starch, Soy flour, Potassium chloride, Tricalcium phosphate, Titanium dioxide colour, Salt, choline chloride, ferrous sulfate, Thiamine mononitrate, copper sulfate, manganese sulfate, niacin, calcium pantothenate, riboflavin supplement, vitamin B-12 supplement, pyroxidine hydrochloride, potassium iodide, folic acid, and sodium selenite.

What a mouthful – literally.

And what in the world are those ingredients? www.RagazziLife.com (the social network for dog owners) will be hosting an event on Wednesday December 9th from 6:30-9:30pm with special guest canine nutritionist and behavioral Stacy Alldredge. Stacy will dispel rumors and concerns associated with home cooked, natural and well balanced dog cuisine as well as prepare and create special tasting menus for all dogs to enjoy!

Does Fido need to lose a couple pounds? Is Spot allergic to most foods? Should Boomer just eat healthier? Stacy will present three different recipes that target and help your dog’s dietary issues. With Stacy’s certified nutrition expertise, no pooch will leave hungry, but they’ll all leave healthier. And with ingredients straight out of most people’s traditional holiday dinner menu (apples, asparagus, turkey, fish, beef, pasta, rice and more), event attendees will know that their dogs are eating as well as they are this holiday season.”

Castor & Pollux® Tops Half-Million-Meal Mark for Freekibble

Source: BusinessWire.com, June 5, 2009

Leading organic and natural pet food brand Castor & Pollux has broken the half-million-meal barrier, donating more than 538,000 meals for dogs and cats in shelters in less than a year as the founding sponsor of freekibble.com.

Created to provide healthy food for hungry homeless dogs and cats, freekibble.com commits to raise 10 pieces of kibble for shelters across the country each time a visitor answers a trivia question on the freekibble web site. Castor & Pollux helps fulfill that commitment by donating its ORGANIX® and Natural Ultramix® dog and cat foods. Castor & Pollux provides food to 12 freekibble-sponsored pet shelters across the country, in many cases fulfilling all of the shelter’s food needs.

“For most shelters, finding food is a constant challenge — you never know when a food donation may come in, or what the quality will be when it arrives at your door,” said Jill Franklin, executive director of freekibble beneficiary The Humane Society of Forsythe County, in Georgia. “Now, we have a steady supply of extremely high-quality food, which both adds to the health of the pets in the shelter, and frees us to focus on finding good homes, not finding the next meal.”

Castor & Pollux co-founder and “Top Dog” Shelley Gunton says the relationship with freekibble is a special one.

“We know we’re not the world’s largest pet food company or biggest shelter donor, and we salute everyone who chips in. But with freekibble, we’re part of a bigger-than-life story that started when a young girl from our area had a vision of feeding every dog and cat that’s in a pet shelter,” said Gunton. “We share the value of feeding pets in need, and with freekibble, we’re participating in a meaningful way.”

Freekibble.com was founded last spring by Mimi Ausland, a 12-year-old at the time. Soon after, she founded freekibblekat.com, and has since become a national sensation, recognized as a People Magazine Hero Among Us, national ASPCA Tommy Monahan Kid of the Year, and national Prudential Spirit of Community honoree.

In addition to donating food to support freekibble site “clicks,” Castor & Pollux created GOOD BUDDY® Mimi’s Favorite Mac & Cheese flavor dog cookies, which generate additional meal donations and funding. The bright red boxes can be found at natural grocery and pet specialty stores across the country. Priced at $4.99, the cookies are a great way for dog lovers to treat their pets while donating a meal to shelter dogs; with each purchase, Castor & Pollux donates additional meals and funds to freekibble.

Castor & Pollux Pet Works’ principal business is organic and natural dog and cat foods, featuring the ORGANIX® line, which complies with all USDA National Organic Program regulations applying to ingredients and packaging of organic human food.

Pet food safety concerns

Source: Capital 9 News, Albany, NY 10/08/2008 10:31 AM
By: Lisa Chelenza

Ruth Sturgis from Dog Daze Bakery has seen a significant rise in customers seeking out options for their pets.

“The past several years there have been two or three pet food recalls in the pet food industry, so it’s a scary thing. People are thinking that they are not feeding Fido or Fidette a really good food, they are feeding them an inferior product, so they come in looking for something all natural, holistic or organic,” said Sturgis.

The first seven ingredients are the most important. Look for single words first, chicken, beef, lamb.
If corn or grain is one of the first few ingredients take a pass on that brand. That goes for canned and kibble.

Some newer brands like “Party Animal” and “Karma” even carry an American flag to let you know its ingredients are made in the USA.

Organic has become a buzz word for many people seeking healthy choices. The organic designation is not easy to get. Look for the symbol from the USDA or OCIA that certifies the product is organic.

If your pet’s food is recalled stop feeding it to your pet immediately and look for signs of illness. If pet has any health issues ask your vet before switching their food.
